My Buddy AAC is a free augmentative and alternative communication tool published by BMC Luminary Ventures LLC of Prescott, Arizona. It gives a person a grid of words and symbols and speaks them aloud using the device's own text-to-speech.
It is free and will stay free. There is no cost, no advertising, no in-app purchase and no subscription.
My Buddy is not a medical device. It has not been reviewed, cleared or approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration or by any comparable body in any other country. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition.
Choosing and setting up a communication system is clinical work. My Buddy is not a substitute for assessment, prescription, training or follow-up by a qualified speech-language pathologist, teacher or clinician. If you are choosing a communication system for a child or an adult who needs one, please involve a professional. We would rather someone use a different tool that a clinician chose for them than use ours because it was free.
My Buddy must not be relied on as the only way a person can summon help. Software can fail, a device can lose power, a screen can break, and speech output can be missed in a noisy room. Anyone who could face a medical or safety emergency needs a backup that does not depend on this app or on any single device.
The Emergency button in the app speaks information that you typed in yourself. It does not contact emergency services, it does not send a message to anyone, and it does not alert us. It only speaks aloud.
My Buddy builds some phrases automatically from the word you select. We check this work and correct it when we find mistakes, but automatically generated language can still be wrong, awkward, or not what the person meant. The voice quality, pronunciation and accent come from your device, not from us. Always confirm that you have understood what someone is trying to say rather than relying on the app's wording alone.
You are responsible for anything you add to the app, including names, addresses, emergency details, custom words and photographs. All of it stays on your device. We never see it and we cannot recover it for you. If you clear the app's data, reinstall it, or lose the device, that content is gone. See the Privacy Policy for details.
My Buddy is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error free, or available at any particular time.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, BMC Luminary Ventures LLC is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, arising out of or relating to your use of or inability to use My Buddy, even if we have been advised that such damages are possible. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app, which is zero.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
My Buddy is intended to be used by children with the involvement of a parent, guardian, teacher or clinician. A responsible adult should set up the app, check the vocabulary, and review anything entered into the personal information fields.
We may update these terms. The effective date above will change when we do. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised terms.
